Ensley is a neighborhood located in the western area of Birmingham, Alabama. It was founded in the late 19th century as a company town for the Ensley Works of the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company (TCI). The TCI company was later acquired by US Steel, and the Ensley Works became one of the largest steel-producing facilities in the southern United States.
In the early 20th century, Ensley thrived as a bustling community, with a theater, hospital, schools, churches, and social clubs. However, the decline of the steel industry in the late 20th century had a significant impact on the community, leading to job losses, population decline, and increased poverty.
Today, Ensley is a predominantly African-American neighborhood with a population of around 10,000 people. It is known for its historic architecture, including the former Ensley Carnegie Library and the historic Ensley High School. The neighborhood has also seen some redevelopment efforts in recent years, including a project to convert a former TCI smokestack into a public art installation.
